How Our Sustainable Reclaimed Wood Boards Are Created.

Reclaimed wood boards come in many different conditions. Some are washed, while others are not. Some have metal pieces, stones, and other debris removed from the surface, while others do not. Some even have remaining metal pieces inside the wood removed, while others are left as they are.Because these processes require time and care, they are sometimes omitted to reduce costs. In fact, some reclaimed wood boards on the market have not been thoroughly washed or inspected for metal pieces remaining inside the wood.At Re:wood by the Wood Reuse Division of Abe-gumi Co., Ltd., we carefully wash each board with a high-pressure washer. We also inspect not only the surface, but also the interior of the wood, removing any remaining metal pieces we find.Delivering reclaimed wood boards that preserve their natural character while meeting high standards of cleanliness and safety — this is one of Re:wood’s most important commitments.

Used Japanese cedar scaffolding boards arrive in 4-meter lengths. At Re:wood, we bring these boards to a trusted sawmill, where they are carefully processed according to their intended use.
This long-established sawmill has many years of experience. Its reliable milling techniques and the careful workmanship of its skilled craftsmen are the very reasons we can entrust this process to them with confidence.

Collecting Reclaimed Scaffolding Boards

At the sawmill, we first have both ends of each 4-meter used Japanese cedar scaffolding board cut off by 20 cm.At both ends of the scaffolding boards, corrugated metal fasteners known as “wave nails” are embedded. These wave nails are used to help prevent the boards from cracking or warping as they dry. However, if the wave nails are left inside the boards, they can interfere with cutting, sawing, or work involving nails and screws. For this reason, we remove the wave nails by cutting off both ends of the boards. The boards, now 3.6 meters long, are then cut in half to create easy-to-handle 1.8-meter pieces.

Cutting Reclaimed Scaffolding Boards

その後、3m60cm(3.6m)になった板を半分にカットし、扱いやすい1m80cm(1.8m)の長さに整えます。

The used Japanese cedar scaffolding boards, now cut to a length of 1.8 meters, finally arrive at our warehouse.
When the boards arrive, they are still covered with dirt, mud, and bits of concrete. We therefore wash each board carefully with a high-pressure washer, removing dirt and grime from each piece. We commonly refer to this process as “washing.”
During the washing process, we clean about 20 boards over the course of one to two hours, washing the sides, front surface, and back surface in that order.
This careful washing is an important preparation step that helps bring out the natural character of the reclaimed wood.

Careful Dirt and Grime Removal by High-Pressure Washing

Some dirt and debris cannot be removed by high-pressure washing alone.
If concrete is attached to the boards, we first remove the larger pieces with a large scraper. Any smaller pieces of concrete that still remain are then carefully removed one by one using tools such as a spatula, hammer, or small scraper.
At the same time, we also remove any large stones attached to the boards, carefully preparing each piece so that our customers can use it with confidence and peace of mind.

Removing Concrete Residue from the Boards

After high-pressure washing, the scaffolding boards absorb water and become extremely heavy. We arrange them in rows of five, leaving about 1–2 cm of space between each board.
We then place wooden spacers between each layer and stack the boards about 20 layers high, creating a pile of 100 boards in total for drying.
This stacking method creates pathways for air to flow between the boards, helping them dry more evenly and efficiently. It is called “sticker stacking.”

Carefully Stacking Washed Reclaimed Scaffolding Boards

The sticker-stacked scaffolding boards are naturally dried outdoors on sunny days and inside the warehouse on rainy days.
Natural drying is a method of slowly drying wood over time under natural conditions, such as wind and air temperature.
After about two months of careful drying, the boards reach a moisture content of around 20%, making them suitable for processing and storage.

Carefully Air-Drying Washed Reclaimed Boards

After drying, the scaffolding boards may still contain nails, screws, small pins, and other metal pieces from the time they were originally used.
First, we visually inspect each board and remove any visible nails and screws from the surface one by one. We also take great care to remove small metal pieces and pins that may be embedded inside the boards, using specialized tools to make sure nothing is overlooked.
Through this careful process, we prepare each board so that our customers can use it with confidence and peace of mind.

Carefully Removing Nails, Screws, Staples, and Other Metal Pieces from Reclaimed Boards

Metal pieces may remain not only on the surface of the reclaimed wood, but also inside it, including broken nails, screws, and other small metal fragments.
Because some metal pieces cannot be seen with the naked eye, we carefully inspect each board one by one using a metal detector. When the detector reacts, we carefully open up that area with specialized tools and remove the metal pieces remaining inside the wood.
Through this repeated process of inspection and removal, we prepare the reclaimed wood so that our customers can use it with confidence and peace of mind.

Carefully Removing Metal Pieces Hidden Inside Reclaimed Boards

Some of the metal pieces left inside reclaimed wood can be extremely small, such as thin steel wires from wire ropes, measuring only about 0.1–0.2 mm in diameter.
In some cases, we also find tiny iron balls, about 0.1–1.0 mm in diameter, which appear to have scattered during welding work.
These pieces may be attached to the surface of the scaffolding boards, but they can also become lodged in cracks, knots, and other small gaps in the wood, making them very difficult to remove. Even so, they can still be detected with a metal detector.
Although the reaction is weaker than with staples or similar metal pieces, we carefully search for and remove each one so that nothing is overlooked.

Carefully Inspecting Reclaimed Boards for Small Metal Pieces and Removing Them for Safe Use

After that, we sand the scaffolding boards to smooth their surfaces.
We finish all six sides in order: the front, the back, and the sides. However, if the boards are sanded too much, the unique character and texture of the reclaimed scaffolding boards can change.
For this reason, we carefully finish only the necessary areas while observing the individual character of each board.
At the same time, we carry out a final inspection for holes, cracks, chips, warping, and bending, and sort the boards by grade according to their condition.
Even for an experienced craftsman working alone, finishing about 100 boards in a day is the limit.

Surface Sanding and Final Inspection
